HOMECOMING SUNDAY
Our annual Homecoming worship service, followed by a church-wide covered dish luncheon, will be held Sunday, September 19. Reverend Faye Rouse, who served as a former Associate Pastor at Saint Andrews, will be delivering the morning message. There will be one joint worship service at 11:00 a.m. Please make plans to attend and don't forget to invite others to join with you on this special day. Prepare a covered dish (or three) and let's make this a wonderful day in the Lord!
Concert to Benefit Haiti – September 17
In November, the North Carolina Annual Conference Cabinet, which is composed of the 12 district superintendents throughout the Annual Conference, led by Bishop Al Gwinn, will be traveling to Michaud, Haiti to work on the Ryan Epps Home for Children (REHC). The mission trip will be focused on building the next phase, which includes the dormitories, kitchen/fellowship area and living quarters for the director and staff. REHC benefits over 30 children who have either lost their parents or who have been signed over to REHC as a result of their inability to support them. Additionally, REHC will provide a center of Worship to the community of Michaud and a School for up to 180 children.
The purpose of REHC is to "change the lives of the people of Haiti by changing its children." Through Christian teaching and strong moral infrastructure, these children will become the quality leaders that Haiti so desperately needs. The staff of REHC is made up of a generation of Haitian people who recognize this value system and desire to pass it along through their hard work and dedication.
Support of REHC comes primarily through donations and is led by a group of people in the Eastern North Carolina area. Through their leadership and the support of many people, the first phase of the REHC building has been accomplished, creating the Worship facility, the School and showers and bathroom facilities. The next phase is scheduled to be built in November due to a generous offer by the United Methodist North Carolina Conference which will be sending its Bishop and his Cabinet on a mission trip.
Please join us for a concert to raise money for building materials that the Cabinet will use on their trip in November. The concert is Friday night, September 17, 7:00 pm, at Garner UMC, 201 Methodist Drive, Garner, NC. There is no cover charge, but we will be taking a love offering. Donations from all our churches will be accepted that evening as well as anytime between now and November. If you are unable to attend the concert, donations may be forwarded directly to the Treasurer, North Carolina Conference, P.O. Box 1970, Garner, NC 27529
COMMITMENT SUNDAY
This year, as each of us prayerfully considers filling out our Estimate of Giving card for 2011, we will be conducting our Stewardship Campaign a little differently. Instead of the crosses coming to your home, as has been the practice for the past six years, you will be receiving your Estimate of Giving card in the mail. On Sunday, September 26, you will have the opportunity to present your Estimate of Giving card to God by placing your card on the altar. Please be in prayer concerning what you will be giving back to God for God’s church at Saint Andrews, in the coming year.
WEDNESDAY NIGHT SUPPERS RETURN
We will begin our Wednesday night suppers for the fall on Wednesday, September 8. The meal each week will be provided by different groups from within the congregation. There is no cost for the meal but donations are welcomed. Supper begins at 5:40 p.m. and concludes at 6:30 p.m. These suppers will occur each Wednesday evening through November 17. A huge thank you goes to Nancy Jo Stone for her coordination of these suppers.
CARD MINISTRY
After a long and hot summer, we are ready to get back into the swing of things. Our next card making session is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 25th starting at 9:30 am in the Fellowship Hall. Also, we need to let you know that the meeting for the Oct. session has been changed to Saturday, Oct 30th.
DAILY BIBLE READINGS
Don’t forget that even though you may not be “caught up” with your Daily Bible readings that you are encouraged to pick up the readings at any point and continue throughout the rest of the year. In addition, Daily Bible study classes will resume on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. and Tuesday mornings at 10 a.m. You also are welcomed to join the Monday evening study which begins at 7:00 p.m. If you do not have a Daily Bible, or have lost yours, then please contact the church office for a new one.
CROP WALK DATE SET
We are looking for walkers and sponsors for the annual CROP Walk which will be held Saturday, October 2 at 9:30 a.m. at Marbles Museum in Raleigh. Be on the alert for sign-up and sponsorship opportunities in the September, Sunday bulletins. For more information please contact Mary Foster, who is coordinating this event for Saint Andrews.
GARNER AREA MINISTRIES
We really appreciate the support from the congregation for our Food of the Month program for Garner Area Ministries. They so desperately need food to keep their pantry stocked to help those in need in our community and are so grateful for what our church does for them! During the month of September, we are asking church members to bring canned soup and place it in the baskets provided in the narthex. Our Food of the Month for October will be peanut butter and jelly and canned vegetables for November. If every Saint Andrews family would bring just ONE can of soup, one jar of jelly, etc., just think of the impact we could have!
HOPE MINISTRIES
We continue to collect travel-size soap, shampoo and lotion for HOPE Ministry and thank all of you who have brought toiletries to share with the homeless. For more information, contact Gloria English at ggenglish@nc.rr.com.
BACKPACK BUDDIES
So if you couldn’t go around the world to serve Christ, where or how can you serve?
14 miles down the road is Fuquay-Varina Elementary School. It’s a fabulous school. I’ve spent 29 years of my life there. To all outward appearances all is well. However, there are seven families that have been identified to be in need. Seven children and their brothers and sisters need the program “Backpack Buddies” which includes six meals and two snacks per child so that these children will be able to eat (something that we take for granted) on the weekend.
I promised the school counselor that I would pilot this program for the school. I’m turning to this congregation to help set up this program. Then, hopefully, with the help of other churches and organizations, we’ll only ask for your support once or twice a year.
Thank you for your feeding the children as Jesus commanded us to do. If you have any questions, please contact Mary Foster.
SUPPORT THE TROOPS GOLF CLASSIC…
A four-person shotgun start golf tournament to benefit military service personnel who have suffered serious injury resulting in disability, is slated to occur on November 11. This event will be held at Bentwinds Golf & Country Club in Fuquay-Varina, with an 11:00 a.m. start. The cost is $65 per person or $260 per team. A buffet dinner is included with prizes being awarded as well. For more information, or to obtain an entry form, please contact the church office.
In addition, you may wish to visit the website: www.militarymissionsinaction.org.
MISSIONS AND MILESTONES
I will confess that when I became Missions Chair, I was a little apprehensive about following in Mary Foster’s footsteps, although I knew she would be my right hand person. And then I discovered how many activities there were beyond my knowledge of what Saint Andrews undertook each year -- I knew the "deer in the headlights" feeling. One year later I can now admit that, although the list is long (and will be evaluated soon), I have had such a great time learning and participating in most of the missions, but the best part of my "job" is working with so many people that I recognized as my "family" but did not really know. Each mission has a core group - people who accept these activities as part of who they are and what they want to accomplish as Christians. I have no sub-committees; I have dedicated workers throughout the year.
Upcoming Events: Participants for the CROP walk will be recruited this month. HOPE Ministries, Angel Food and WHIN are also on the horizon. Turkey Tree, Operation Christmas Child, Angel Tree and cards for our soldiers are also on the calendar.
Your input is needed!! On September 12 at 6:00pm there will be a Missions planning meeting. The Committee will be reviewing our 2010 activities and discuss some new ideas for 2011. There have been many suggestions for expanding our activities, including mission outreach to some economically impacted areas within states around us. We also want to look at maximizing our budgeted funds because the mission budget for 2011 will be held at the 2010 allocation.
El Salvador: The ES Team is planning a Friday Night at the Movies event to share food, activities and experiences with the congregation. Keep your eyes out for more details!
Walk for the Cure: The SAUMC food booth will now be joined by a SAUMC activity booth inside the walking track. Two volunteers are needed to assist with this mission. This is a very worthwhile opportunity and not much work - just sharing the coordination of our activities and team
JOY CLUB
The Joy Club will meet on Tuesday, September 21st at noon in the church fellowship hall for a covered dish luncheon followed by a guest speaker. Bring your favorite dish to eat and share.
LOADS OF LOVE
Loads of Love will meet on Monday, August 30th, since the first Monday in September is Labor Day and a number of our folks will be out of place. This ministry is so fulfilling and we invite you to join us as we share Christ’s love with our shut-ins each month. If you would like to participate, or if you know someone who should be added to our list, please let us know.
Meet us at church at 10:00 a.m. on August 30th and prepare to be blessed by working with this very special program. We will resume our regular schedule in October and will gather on Monday, October 4th.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR SEPTEMBER
Notes from Sally:
Welcome Back, Guppies and Tweens! It’s been a wonderful summer with picnics and parties and family vacations but now it’s time to get back together, welcome our new members and get back to spreading the Word to, and through, the children of our church. No doubt, I have the greatest job in the world!
If your child is between the ages of 4 and 5th grade and isn’t currently involved in our children’s ministry program, this is the perfect time to join us.
We will start the new school year off with a PARENTS MEETING on 9/12 at 4:30-Please plan to be there-we have some changes to make!!!
Thank you all for volunteering your time to help make this ministry possible.
May God continue to bless each of you - the family of God worshipping as the family of St. Andrews.
In Christian love,
Sally
What are Guppies and Tweens???
As part of our Children’s Ministry program, St. Andrews has two groups for fellowship. Guppies are children between the ages of 4 and First Grade and Tweens are in Second through Fifth Grade. We meet on Sunday evenings for fellowship and music, and supper is provided by parent volunteers
We also have a children’s worship time during morning worship which we call W.O.W. (Worship-Our Way).
We look forward to welcoming new members to these groups and hope that children who are in this age range will join us as we work together to Serve Praise And Grow In Christ!
We continue to covet the prayers of our church family, as these youngest Christians seek to grow in their relationship with Christ through fellowship, service and worship.
Peace, in Christ,
Sally
YOUTH NEWS
Counselor’s blahba …
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year! That’s right, Happy New Year. It’s time to start another year of UMYF. We have a ton of programs, missions, sessions and surprises planned and we also have basketball.
Food for thought: Think about why you will be coming to youth (UMYF) and then tell one of your friends why you are planning to attend. Someone may need our youth group more than you do but they are too afraid or proud to ask.
Make it seem like they are doing you a favor by coming to youth when in reality, you will be getting them closer to God and you, in one meeting. Chew on that for a while.

Something is wrong with our human race. Could it be sin? Sin is commonly thought of today as referring to matters of conduct. The problem with this way of thinking is that it does not recognize that God is the issue. Sin is a wrong attitude toward God. Sin never begins as an outright act of rebellion – in fact; it often seems to be a reasonable thing to do. Eve saw that the apple “was good for food…a delight to the eyes… desired to make one wise.” She did not set out to rebel against God, but that’s how she and Adam ended up. Sin is attractive.
Sin pays off now. Following God’s plan may not pay off until after we are dead. Why then would anyone choose not to sin? Well, that’s the point: if we choose Goodness, then we are expressing an act of faith in God. God tells us there are better things to come. Faith is the path away from sin. King David wronged Bathsheba, Uriah, his legal wives and their children, the kingdom, and himself, but he ultimately knew that his sin was a God issue (Psalm 51:4). Sin is an act against God.
How serious is sin? It is serious enough for God to have become directly involved as the point of sacrifice for sin. The cross acknowledges that sin is a God issue. God has not only overcome sin, but has initiated the process of reconciliation.
Sin has consequences in and of itself. It separates us from one another, from community. If I steal things, I am quite likely to believe that you do, too – even if I have no direct evidence. I become suspicious of my neighbor, because I believe him capable of doing what I do. If I lie, I expect others to lie. This is not God’s punishment, but a direct consequence of my sinning (James 1:14-15).
Sin makes us susceptible to misunderstanding and division.
